8 Easy Outfit Tips for Beautiful Family Photos

Maria Wilkens Photography - Gisborne, New Zealand

One thing I never expected about parenting: how much fun I’d have dressing my kid. Not the actual wrangling-him-into-clothes part (that’s a full workout), but finding cute outfits? Love it. Meanwhile, I’m out here in jeans and a hoodie most days - shout out to all the other mums in their “daycare drop-off uniform.”

But then it’s time for family photos and suddenly I realise: I’ve got a well-dressed pre-schooler, a husband who only owns blue shirts... and me, with no clue what to wear.

So, after photographing hundreds of families and doing a few of my own shoots, I’ve put together my go-to tips for picking outfits that feel like you - while still looking amazing in photos.

1. Coordinate, don’t match

Gone are the days of everyone in white shirts and jeans. Pick 2-3 complementary colours and work from there - mixing tones, layers and textures.

2. Think about where these photos will live

Look at the colours in your home. Are you more neutral or bright? Choose outfits that will look beautiful hanging on your walls.

3. Add texture and accessories

Scarves, linen, knits, even a cute hat - they photograph so well and bring your outfits to life. Layers = visual interest.

4. Keep patterns minimal

One patterned piece can tie everything together beautifully, but too many and it starts to get chaotic.

5. Skip the cartoon tees

Even if your little one insists. Trust me, Spiderman doesn’t need to make the family photo wall.

6. Try everything on ahead of time

Check sizes, do a laundry run, and avoid that night-before panic. You’ll thank yourself.

7. Move around in it!

Don’t just stand in front of the mirror - move! Can you sit, lean over, lift your arms without tugging or flashing? Are you constantly adjusting your clothes after any little movement? Choose something different then! Comfort really matters when you’re wrangling kids and chasing beach light.

8. Choose timeless over trendy

These photos will last decades. Simple, classic pieces will age beautifully.

Bonus: Want a goddess moment?

If you’re dreaming of something a little more elevated, I’ve got a client wardrobe full of beautiful gowns you’re welcome to borrow. Whether you’re after soft and flowy or bold and striking, we’ll find something that fits your vision.
